US Pet Ownership Statistics - Pet Ownership on the Rise

According to the 2009/2010 National Pet Owners Survey by the APPA, 62% of U.S. households own a pet, which equates to 71.4 millions homes.


In 1988, the first year the survey was conducted, 56% of U.S. households owned a pet as compared to 62% in 2008

The 2009-2010 National Pet Owners Survey gives the following breakdowns:

Number of U.S. Households that Own a Pet   
  • Birds - 6 Million
  • Cats - 38.2 Million
  • Dogs - 45.6 Million
  • Horses -  3.9 Million
  • Freshwater Fish - 13.3 Million
  • Saltwater Fish - 700,000
  • Reptiles - 4.7 Million
  • Small Animals-  5.3 Million
Total Number of Pets Owned in the U.S.

  •  Birds - 15 Million
  •  Cats - 93.6 Million
  •  Dogs -  77.5Million
  •  Equine - 13.3Million
  •  Freshwater Fish - 171.7 Million
  •  Saltwater Fish  - 11.2 Million
  •  Reptile - 13.6 Million
  •  Small Animals - 15.9 Million
